vpn has anyone gotten to work

VPN - has anyone gotten it to work?

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has gotten Vista to work with VPN's yet. I have tried to connect to PPTP and IPSec VPN's, but NOTHING works. It doesn't even tell me why the connection failed. I look in the event viewer and there is nothing to be found...
Any insight would be appreciated. All of my VPN connections work with the built-in XP client or the Cisco Client...

Just set up & connected using both a VPN and a Remote Desktop session. Only issue is locating the setup facility - Networking is too S P R E A D out over too many applets/locations on Vista. All the functions need to be re-joined in a single access point.

You can setup VPN from Control Panel > (set to "Classic View") > Internet Options > Connections (tab) > Setup, and you will get a list of various networking options. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

You make a good point there. That's what I noticed too, that there are too many ways to get into a specific dialog box. It gives an illusion that there are way too many options to fiddle with. This is a general observation, and you're right the networking options are a good example.

My problem is not with setting up the connection. The connection is setup. The problem is that it does not connect and there are no error messages....

Open Control Panel (set to "Classic View") > open "Problem Reports and Solutions" > View Problem History (left pane) > look if there any error messages relating VPN or Internet connections, right click one, click View Details. And how is a shortcut to the Ethernet options gonna help? I could easily access this without cluttering my desktop by clicking Start > Network > click "Network Center" on the toolbar and click "Manage Network connections" in the left pane.

Some people find it easier using native settings in XP - I still find it easier to do it this way then faff around in the Network Center.

To be fair - there's very little about VPN in there. If you don't see what you want to connect to, click on "I don't see what I want to connect to" and see if that brings up any options.
Also, if you want to see your XP style network settings (some find it far easier using a system they've been using for 5 years already to set up their settings!), check this :o) http://www.vistabase.co.uk/welcome.php?subcats/settings/xpstylenetwork

Grrrr... Why are you posting this link which is not helping?????
Connecting a VPN network in Vista is so Elementary. Click Start Network > Connect to a network (if VPN is preconfigured on your network, simply click in the Show list box and select Dial-up and VPN.
If you are gonna setup one, on the same Connect to a network wizard, click the "Set up a connection or network" link > click "Setup a virtual private network (VPN) connection"
Manage network connections does not help Zack, its only for existing connections or configuring your ethernet. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

I've had a lot of useful and positive feedback from posting my links Andre - a lot of people like using the XP network settings rather than the Vista one. So don't get all angry - it's only bothering you it seems.

Grrrr... Why are you posting this link which is not helping?????
Connecting a VPN network in Vista is so Elementary. Click Start Network Connect to a network (if VPN is preconfigured on your network, simply click in the Show list box and select Dial-up and VPN.

Hello Guys,
First of all, thanks for all of the help. I think that we are having problems explaining the issues at hand. After I create the connection, I did this originally, I then attempt to establish the connection. When I attempt that, the dialog box simply says, "Connecting to Office" and then says "Failed to connect to Office." The problem that I have is that I do not see why it will not connect. I am not certain if it is a username or password issue, if it is not connecting to the correct server, which I pinged and have dould checked the address in the VPN connections settings, or if the problem has to do with some port settings. It simply does not connect and gives an extremely generic error message. I also do not see how I can change the password for the connection. I created another one with no username and password and it never prompts me for one, it simply does not connect and gives me the same irritating useless error message...
I hope this information helps.

I wonder if its UAP thats affecting this? Try disabling it to see if it makes a difference, Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run > type MSCONFIG > Tools (tab) > scroll down > select "Disable UAP" > click "Launch"

close "Command Prompt" > restart you system. Try connecting again.

Well, I haven't read any success stories. The OP pointed out, there is no problem setting up a connection. You post that link that it will answer every network connection issue in Windows, a simplified Network window is not gonna solve Stewarts problem Zack. Stewart,
Your problem is that Cisco doesn't currently have a client that works on Windows Vista. We are big Csico shop too and to date the only way we have been able to VPN has been to use a ISAVPN server. Cisco will be comign out with a client very soon that is designed to work with Windows Vista Beta2. (they have been waiting till beta 2 and are finalizing testing now that it has shipped)
sorry i know this doesn't help your immediate need, but rest assured help is coming.

"Zack Whittaker" wrote in message To be fair - there's very little about VPN in there.

"Stewart Saathoff" wrote in message Hello,
I
was wondering if anyone has gotten Vista to work with VPN's yet.

I too was using the PPTP client for Windows in XP. I have never managed to get the Vista to connect using VPN. I have no problems in XP whatsoever, but in Vista it just fails to connect without displaying any error information.

"Andre Da Costa [Extended64]" wrote in message I wonder if its UAP thats affecting this? Try disabling it to see if it makes a difference, Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run > type MSCONFIG > Tools (tab) > scroll down > select "Disable UAP" > click "Launch" close "Command Prompt" > restart you system. Try connecting again.
If that does not work, I suggest filing a report on the issue using the Feedback link on your desktop. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta
"Stewart Saathoff" wrote in message Hello Guys,
First of all, thanks for all of the help.
